Welcome to Dormition Orthodox Mission We are an Orthodox church in Cameron County, under the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), Diocese of the South. Our mission is from St. George of Pharr, TX, and the commission is to bring the ancient Christian faith to Cameron County, Brownsville, Bayview, San Benito, Los Fresnos, Port Isabel, South Padre Island, Laguna Vista, Starbase, Rio Hondo, and the surrounding area. We are currently worshipping in a temporary location while working to acquire land and build the region’s second Orthodox temple. Our Mission
From St. George to the Dormition Mission Orthodoxy has been growing steadily in the Rio Grande Valley. For many years, St. George Orthodox Church in Pharr (Hidalgo County) has served as the region’s only Orthodox parish. Through God’s grace, St. George has experienced remarkable growth — so much so that it is now filled to capacity, with families, catechumens, and inquirers coming from all directions. Many faithful from Cameron County have been traveling 45 minutes to over an hour to attend services. With the increasing number of Orthodox Christians and those exploring the ancient Christian faith, it became clear that the Valley needed a second parish, closer to the communities of Harlingen, Los Fresnos, San Benito, and Brownsville. A New Mission for South Texas In response to this growing need, we have launched a new Orthodox mission in Cameron County: The Dormition of the Birthgiver of God Orthodox Mission, under the Diocese of the South (OCA). Our goal is to establish the region’s second Orthodox church, providing: A spiritual home closer to families in Cameron County Space for worship, fellowship, and education A foundation for future ministries and outreach An accessible community for inquirers and catechumens We are blessed to be worshiping temporarily through the generous hospitality of Trinity on the Border, while we work toward securing 10–20 acres of land for a permanent temple and parish center.
